Congratulation to Emma Brown and James Boal on their fantastic results in the Victorian State Championships held in Wangaratta last weekend

2010 Junior State Cycling Championships
One hundred & eighty cyclists aged from 8 to 18 contested the Victorian Junior State Individual Time Trial & Road Race Championships on the weekend. The Wangaratta Cycling Club have been hosting the championships for the last 13 years, with the saleyards complex the perfect setting for the start/finish area & the terrain & conditions of the immediate area challenging for the cyclists.
Conditions were perfect for the time trial with fine conditions & no wind. The first to embark on their individual time trial were the under 11 girls travelling over a 4km distance. The winner was Alana Field from Carnegie-Caulfieldwith a time of 8 minutes & 41 seconds. Over the same course the winner of the under 11 boys was Corey Nichol from the Castlemaine Club.
Wangaratta had two representatives in the Girls 13 category. Kirra Hunter in her first open event recorded a time of 18 minutes & 18 seconds for the 8km course. Emily White from Wangaratta also from Wangaratta recorded a time of 18 minutes & 24 seconds with the winner Ashleigh Hocking from the Camperdown Club recording a time of 14 minutes & 46 seconds.
Thomas McDonald was one of the club's successful riders on the weekend winning silver in the under 13 boys 8km trial. He recorded a time of 15 minutes & 12 seconds, with the winner, Thomas Benton from the Carnegie-Caulfied club recoreding sa time of 14 minutes & 58 seconds.
In the Women 15 category, the club had three representatives racing the 10km course, with Nicci Clark breaking the 20km mark & the averaging just over 30kph, finishing in 6th place with a time of 19 minutes & 43 seconds. Emma Brown recorded a timeof 20 minutes & 4 seconds & Kate Brown 20 minutes & 15 seconds. The winner was Emma Bilston from the Ballarat Club with a time of 17 minutes & 53 seconds.
In a large field of riders in the Men 15 category racing over the 10km course, Tomarsh Loki finished in 16th place with a timeof 17 minutes & 53 seconds. Fergus Samon was pleased with his personal best time of 19 minutes & 3 seconds, with the winner, Lucas Hamilton from Ararat recording a time of 16 minutes & 8 seconds.
Racing over the same 10km course thewinner of the Women 17 category was Imogen Jelbart from the Bendigo Club with a time of 16 minutes & 48 seconds, with locals Jess White recording a time of 20 minutes 24 seconds & Jacinta Findlay a time of 19 minutes & 14 seconds.
The Men 17 category was dominated by the VIS riders finishing in the first 4 places. Thomas Hamilton from Ararat was the winner recording a time of 20 minutes & 28 seconds for the 14km course at an average speed of 42kph. Tristan Boal who has been plagued by injury this year was the quickest of the locals recording a time of 24 minutes & 18 seconds , with James Fox not far behind with a time of 24 minutes & 25 seconds.
In the women 19 category the winner was Shannon McCurley from Latrobe Valley recording a time of 24 minutes & 36 seconds for the 14km course.
Travelling a distance of 18km, the Men 19 category were the last to leave the starting ramp. At this level of competition, tensions are high, with many looking to further their cycling careers. The winner was Brent Neilson from the Balckburn Club recording a time of 25 minutes & 22 seconds at an average speed of 42.6kph. James Boal from Wangaratta just missed out on a medal finishing in 4th place with a time of 26 minutes & 50 seconds. Mark White also from Wangaratta recorded a time of 29 minutes & 45 seconds.
Sunday's events was the road race championships & with heavy fog in the Wangaratta area, racing was delayed by half a hour.
First to roll out were the Women 15 who comenced their race at the Taminick/Warby Range Rd crossroads. Racing the Glenrowan/Taminick loop it was a matter of who could hangon to the talented pair of Emma Bilston from Ballarat & Courtney Field from Carnegie-Caulfield. Riders dropped off as the race progressed with the pair some distance in front at the top of Taminick. Wangaratta's Emma Brown & Zoe Nicholson from Ararat were the next to cross the peak. With the pair in front slowing down, they managed to catch up before the final sprint for the finish. They split up again in the final kilometre with Courtney Field taking the win from Emma Bilston. In the sprint for 3rd, a very determined Emma Brown was thrilled to win the bronze medal. Club members Kate Brown finished in 7th place & Nicci Clark 8th place.
The under 11 boys & girls raced one lap of the 'Reith Estate' a distance of 8km. The winners of these races were once again Corey Nicol & Alan Field.
The Men 15 raced a 35km distance from the saleyards & around the Taminick loop. With a field of 35 riders the best placed of the locals was Tomarsh Loki finishing in the second bunch.
The Women 17 raced over the same distance with the winer Antonia Abbisogni from Bendigo. Wangaratta's Katrina Rose, Jess White & Jacinta Findlay finished further back in a class field.
The under 13 categories raced 2 laps of the 'Reith Estate' a distance of 15km. The majority of the boys stayed together till the turn into the saleyards. In the sprint to the finish, Thomas McDonald was unfortunate to be boxed in & unable to get a clear line to the finish. The girls stayed together for the first lap with Emily White leading them into the second lap. An attack shortly after left a few behind. In the sprint to the finish Ashleigh Hocking once again proved her strength. Riding well in her first opn race, Kirra Hunter finished in 8th place with Emily White in 10th place.
The Men 17 raced 2 laps of the Taminick loop, a total of 57km. The race was once again dominated by the VIS riders with locals James Fox & Tristan Boal finishing well.
The 100km Men 19 race was tactical with a fast & slow pace. Starting before the Men 17 race, they were caught & passed. The pace picked up with a break away by James Butler from Sunbury. He stayed away for three laps when he was finally caught early in the last lap. The pace then slowed before till the final Taminick climb. With ten riders still in contention it was Cameron Parlevliet from the Blackburn Club to win the sprint from Brent Nelson also from the Blackburn club & in a photo finish Wangaratta's James Boal won bronze from Brunswick rider Shaun O'Callaghan. The second bunch to finish which included Mark White from Wangaratta finished only a minute behind the lead bunch.
The Wangaratta Cycling club is thrilled with the successful running of the event with thanks to the patience of road traffic & volunteers for their help & cooperation.
Full on racing for juniors will now take a break before the start of the spring season in late August. Next Saturday will be the junior aggregate presentation day at the Wangaratta Saleyards with novelty racing being the plan for the day.
