Race 6. 12th September 15 Mile Creek   "Graeme Daws Memorial"               45km

TIGHT FINISH IN GRAEME DAWS MEMORIAL RACE

FROM DAVID WOHLERS

Racing was held on a 50km out and back course to 15 Mile Creek. Conditions were great for racing except for the strong wind, which was to give riders some work to do on the way home.

The handicap race consisting of 38 riders spread over 8 different time groups got underway at 2pm. Limit riders were off 22minutes and then the other groups of 4 and 5 riders followed. The gaps had narrowed a bit by the turn around point, but the block and scratch riders up the paced into the wind on the way home and started pegging back all the groups one by one until they caught all groups by Warby Range Road, except for the limit riders, who were still a short distance in front.

Along Shanley Street, coming in to the finish, a sea of about 24 riders were quickly descending in on the front four, but not quite in time and the limit riders sustained their efforts to get over the line 5.9seconds ahead of the bunch. The winning time was 1:31:32 at an average speed of 32kph.

Paul Lane rode a great race to hold out up and coming junior Tomarsh Loki for the win, 3rd went to another rising junior in Jessica White, with Jim Samon fourth.

Fastest time and fifth place went to Tully Lyster (off scratch) in a time of 1:09:38 average speed 42.2kph. James Boal, Peter Gottschling and Laurie Lyster claiming the other prizes.

The club wishes to pass on its appreciation to all who supported the race in Graeme's memory especially Shane Gibson, Laurie Cutler, Charlie and Dot Larkins and Glenda Daws for their generous awarding of trophies and prize money for the race. The club hopes to repay them with a bigger and better memorial event next year.

Junior Results

A variety of events were partaken in the final week of this year's junior road aggregate. Twelve riders first had a warm up lap of Reith Estate with Ted Woodley escorting the younger riders.

The first race event of the day was a 1 lap time trial of the sale yards. Katrina Rose who is showing good form had the fastest time of 58 seconds.

Riders were then broken into 3 groups for a Criterium of the sale yards.

The A Grade group was an all girl affair of Katrina Rose, Emma & Kate Brown & Melanie Clark. Katrina, who in her first year of under 17 racing, has recently shown great improvement & rode away from the other three to take the win, with Emma finishing second in the final sprint from Kate & Melanie.

In the B Grade race it was thought that the two boys, Thomas McDonald & Lachlan Seymour would be considerably stronger than the tow girls, Rebecca Thompson & Nicole Clark, so the girls were given a half lap head start. However, the girls combined to ride a good race & stay away from the boys, with Rebecca crossing the line in first place ahead of Nicole, with Lachlan outsprinting Thomas in the sprint for third.

The C grade category consists of our youngest competitors & for their 3 lap race they were sent off when the rider in front reached the first bend. Douglas White was the first to take with Samantha Thompson in hot pursuit, followed by Jamie Woodley & Emily White as the scratch marker. When the riders crossed the line for the final lap, all riders were still in their starting order with only Samantha & Emily closing in on the rider in front. At the finish line Samantha just took the win from Douglas, with Emily riding in front of Jamie.

The A & B Grade riders then partook in a pairs time trial, where an A Grade rider rode the course & then & to completely stop & tag their B Grade partner, who then had to clip in & complete the course. For the A Grade riders it was a test of having to clip in quickly & then stop in a small area to be able to tag their partner, with the B Grade rides having to clip in quickly to complete the course.  All grades then raced some straight line sprints, with the final activity for the A & B Grade riders being riding the course only using one leg.  All riders were awarded winners for the day & received McDonald's vouchers.

Race 2.           15th August        Max's Block X 2                                         45km

Wangaratta Cycling Club race results Saturday 15th august.  33 senior riders raced 2 laps of Max's Block a distance of 45km in excellent weather conditions.  A and B combined again with A grade going clear of the B grade group by the end of the race.  An 11 strong D grade group stayed together for most of the race with a hard fought sprint to the line.

Results:

A Grade:                 1st Matt Clark 1:10,               2nd Ian Boyd,                          3rd Tully Lyster.

B Grade:                 1st Craig McAlister 1:14,     2nd Geoff Morley,                  3rd Peter Lubbers.

C Grade:                 1st Mark White 1:20,             2nd Mark Staley,                   3rd Tristan Boal.

D Grade:                 1st Sam Miranda 1:28,          2nd Katrina Rose,                 3rd Zachary Drury.

With a reported incident of an aggressive magpie along Warby Range Road, 14 juniors raced a variety of events closer to the Saleyards.

The first event for A Grade was 2 laps of Reith Estate starting in Reith Road, approximately 13km. B Grade was an all girl event, racing approximately 6.5km, 1 lap of Reith Estate. C Grade stayed in at the saleyards doing some skills.

In the B Grade race, the girls stayed together till the top of Shanley Street, when Nicole Clark broke the field apart with an attack. She crossed the line in first place ahead of Sophia Drury, Rebecca Thompson, Emily White & Stephanie Horton. The A Grade fields were still together after the first lap & it was Hamish Haynes who took the initiative & broke away to take the win with Kate Boyd trying to chase him down. She crossed the line in 2nd place & then it was Kate Brown 3rd in the sprint for the line with Thomas McDonald, Melanie Clark & Fergus Samon with Liam McAlister not far behind.

Back in the saleyards the juniors took part in a 1lap, approximately 700 meters time trial, followed by a Criterium.

In C Grade, Emily White took the win comfortably ahead of Jamie Woodley, Samantha Thompson & Thomas White. Rebecca Thompson led the way in the B Grade race of 4 laps, with Nicole Clark not far behind. When the bell sounded for the final lap, Nicole made her move & passed Rebecca on the far straight. However, Rebecca cornered well & it was a sprint for the line with Nicole a half wheel in front. Sophia who was in her second week of racing was not far behind, followed by Stephanie.

Hamish Haynes went out hard in the 5 lap A grade event, with a sprint in the middle for a chocolate! Kate Boyd nearly succeeded in chasing him down, but the promise of a chocolate drove Hamish on to take the sprint & the win. Kate Boyd rode a good race, with Thomas McDonald not too far behind. Kate Brown took the sprint for fourth from Liam McAlister with Fergus Samon in sixth.
